COD Beach Volleyball grabs first win of 2018, splits with Gauchos and Dons

COD traveled to the Irvine Valley Quad at the Irvine Valley College in Irvine, taking on Saddleback (0-4) at 11 a.m. and Santa Ana (3-2) at 1 p.m.

Desert opened up against the Gauchos and the team of freshman Ashtyn Lyneis (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) won their first match of 2018, sweeping aside their opponents in a close first match 21-19, then punishing them in the second set 21-12. The team of freshman Naomi Garcia-Marquez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) and freshman Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) dominated their opponents in the first set, 21-9 and then had to go extras to win their second set, 30-28. The team of sophomore Alysha Garcia (Thermal Desert Mirage) and freshman Genesis Garza (Thermal Desert Mirage) rolled past the Gauchos, 21-16 and 21-17 and the team of freshman Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and freshman Brooke Topliff (Rancho Mirage H.S.) lost in straight sets, 21-8 and 21-17. The team of sophomore Ashley Schwartz (Yucca Valley H.S.) and sophomore Aaliyah Charley (Thermal Coachella Valley) won their match in a "walk over."

The Roadrunners then took on Santa Ana and the team of Garcia-Marquez and Sundback fell in their first set, 21-17, then blew up the Dons in the second set, 21-8 and in the third and deciding set, won narrowly, 15-13. The team of Garcia and Garza also lost their first set, 21-18 and played a close second set, wining 21-16, then rolled in the third set 15-9. The team of Schwartz and Charley lost a heart breaker as they won their first set, 21-18, fell just short in the second set, 21-19 and then couldn't hold on in the third set, 15-6. The two other Desert teams lost in straight sets.

The next match for College of the Desert Beach Volleyball will be on March 9th, where they will host a match for the first time in program history as they welcome to Civic Center Park in Palm Desert, the Victor Valley Rams and the Glendale Vaqueros. Hope to see you there.
