COD Beach Volleyball sweeps past the Vaqueros and Rams at home

COD (3-3) held their first home Beach Volleyball match in program history on the sand courts at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert, sweeping past the Glendale Vaqueros and the Victor Valley Rams (1-3).

Desert opened up against the Vaqueros, a club team representing Glendale College, and the team of freshman Ashtyn Lyneis (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) swept aside their opponents in a lop sided first match 21-9, then playing a much closer second set, but still winning, 21-18. The team of freshman Naomi Garcia-Marquez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) and freshman Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) dominated their opponents in the first set, 21-5 and swept them aside in the second set, 21-7. The team of sophomore Marisol Ruiz (Thermal Desert Mirage) and sophomore Alysha Garcia (Thermal Desert Mirage) rolled past Glendale, 21-11 and 21-13 and the team of freshman Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and freshman Brooke Topliff (Rancho Mirage H.S.) were superb in straight sets, winning 21-12 and 21-16. The team of sophomore Ashley Schwartz (Yucca Valley H.S.) and sophomore Aaliyah Charley (Thermal Coachella Valley) won their match in a "walk over."

The Roadrunners then took on Victor Valley and the team of Garcia-Marquez and Sundback fell in their first set, 21-16, then blew up the Rams in the second set, 21-14 and in the third and deciding set, won narrowly, 15-8. The team of Schwartz and Charley also lost in their first set, 21-13, then knocked over Victor Valley in the second set, 21-11 and squeaked by in the final set, 15-11. The three other Desert teams won in straight sets.

Next home match for College of the Desert Beach Volleyball will be Friday, March 16th beginning at 9 a.m., where they will host the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opener, featuring all six PCAC teams at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park. The Roadrunners will be taking on the MiraCosta Spartans of Oceanside and the Grossmont Griffins of El Cajon. Hope to see you there.
