COD Beach Volleyball splits doubleheader to remain 3rd in PCAC
COD (9-3; 2-2) hosted Friday's matches at the Civic Center Park, where they fell to the Grossmont Griffins , 4-1, then swept the Palomar Comets , 5-0.
The Roadrunners first challenge of the event was the PCAC leader, Grossmont (13-2; 4-0). The "threes" team of Kendal Faynor (British Columbia Semiahoo Secondary) and sophomore Naomi Garcia (Rancho Mirage H.S.) grabbed the sole win for Desert, taking the Griffins in two sets, 24-22 and 21-18. Grossmont showed up to maintain their undefeated conference status and took the match against the Roadrunners, 4-1.
Desert would find a renewed energy as they finished the event by sweeping Palomar (2-8; 0-4), 5-0. The "ones" team of sophomore Ashtyn Lyneis (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman Kelsey Smith (Delta, BC South Delta Secondary) eventually burnt out the Comets in an extra set, winning 21-23, 12-21, and 15-11. The "twos" team of freshman Taylor Adair (Yucca Valley H.S.) and freshman Kathleen Geiberger (Palm Desert H.S.) continued the blaze as they easily took the win in two sets, 21-14 and 21-16. The "threes" team of freshman Kendal Faynor (British Columbia Semiahoo Secondary) and sophomore Naomi Garcia (Rancho Mirage H.S.) also won in two sets, 21-14 and 21-9.
In the most impressive win of the event, the "fours" team of sophomore Shay Mesa (Indio Shadow Hills) and sophomore Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) barely let Palomar on the board, winning in two sets, 21-8 and 21-3. Deserts "fives" team of sophomore Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and sophomore Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) took the last win of the sweep, as the Comets were unable to field a "fives" team.
Next pair of matches for College of the Desert Beach Volleyball will be Friday, April 5th beginning at 8 a.m., in San Diego, where they will take on the Grossmont Griffins and the San Diego Mesa Olympians. Hope to see you there!
