COD Baseball struggles against top team in the state, falling to Chargers, 8-1

COD (1-3) had their hands full against last year's CCCAA Baseball state finalist, the Cypress Chargers (4-0), after taking a 1-0 lead early, the Chargers rattled off 8 unanswered runs, in an 8-1 loss.

COD was the "road" team in this contest and used their lead off opportunities well as they grabbed a one run lead in the top of the first. Freshman short stop Allan Dong (Honolulu (HI) Kalani) led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on back-to-back bunt sacrifices. Then freshman third baseman Nicholas Follett (Toronto (ON) Bishop Allen Academy) reached on a throwing error by the Chargers third baseman and Dong darted home to score, giving the Roadrunners early 1-0 lead.

That would be the only run of the day for the Roadrunners as the Chargers tied the game at 1-1 with a leadoff home run, scored two more in the second, scored two more in the fifth, hit a two-run home run in the seventh and added one more run in the eighth.

Freshman right handed starting pitcher Jake Mesa (La Quinta H.S.) tossed five complete, surrendering five runs, all earned on five hits, walking three and striking out four, in his second loss of the season. Sophomore right handed relief pitcher Riley Owen (Tumwater, WA) threw three innings allowing three runs, two earned on four hits and walked one.
