COD Baseball struggles to catch the Comets, 16-1

COD (3-23; 1-10) looked to be on the right track early against the Palomar Comets of San Marcos (13-7-1; 5-3), but big innings in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings proved to be the difference for the visitors, as the Roadrunners fell, 16-1.

Palomar got onto the scoreboard with a run in the second and three runs in the third, adding five runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth, to give the Comets a 13-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

Sophomore center fielder and leadoff hitter, Izayah Alvarez (Palm Desert H.S.) ended the no hit bid by the Comets starting pitcher, by scalding a one out infield single to the short stop. Unfortunately, that would be the only runner on base that inning for Desert.

Palomar would add three more runs in the top of the eighth, but the Roadrunners would respond with a run of their own to bust up the shutout in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman right fielder Noah Ponce (Riverside Hillcrest) would reach on a one out hit-by-pitch, then stole second base and then scored when freshman left fielder Anthony Gutierrez (Yucca Valley H.S.) punched a shot to third and the first baseman bobbled the put out attempt.

Desert would get their second hit of the afternoon on a single to center by freshman catcher Casey Allen (Twentynine Palms H.S.) in the bottom of the ninth.
