COD Baseball falls short of sweeping Arabs, 6-4

COD (5-32; 3-18) were so close to grabbing their first sweep of 2019, but a two run outburst by the visitors in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference, as the Imperial Valley Arabs (7-31; 4-20) took the game, 6-4.

The Arabs would get on the scoreboard first, adding a run in the first, second and third innings, then adding another run in the sixth and a pair of runs in the seventh, to give Imperial Valley a 6-0 lead.

Undaunted, the Roadrunners would plate four runs in the seventh to make the game close.

Freshman left fielder Anthony Gutierrez (Yucca Valley H.S.) would lead off the inning with a single to center, the next two Desert batters would be out by way of the pop out and strike out. Then freshman catcher Joseph Perez (Buckeye (AZ) Union) reaching on an error by the Arabs third baseman, moving Gutierrez to third base.

Freshman center fielder Brice Pokershing (Fontana Summit) would single to center field, scoring Gutierrez and then, back at the top of the lineup, freshman second baseman Delvan Gomez (Cerritos Gahr) grabbed a walk to load the bases. Freshman short stop Ryan Rodriguez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would single to center, scoring Perez and Pokershing, cutting the Imperial Valley lead in half, 6-3.

The Rodriguez single to center chased the Arabs starter, and the reliever promptly walked the next batter, sophomore first baseman Matthew Fisher (Redlands H.S.) and a wild pitch scored Gomez from third base, getting the Roadrunners within two, 6-4.

Unfortunately, that would be all of the runs scored for Desert on this afternoon.
