COD Comes Up Short Against LA Valley

Palm Desert, CA - COD moved the ball well against the 22nd ranked team in the state, but the Roadrunners saw two drives end inside Valley's 25 yard line without any points. COD out gained the Monarchs for the night 277 yards to 266 and 58 of Valley's yards came on a late play that sealed the game. The Roadrunners defense was stout all night only giving up 10 points to the Monarchs offense. Three of those points were off a short field after a blocked punt in the third and seven more on the late touchdown with 2:13 to play in the game.

The Monarch's defense and special teams were the story tonight. After Benjamin Myles started the scoring with 5:29 left on the clock in the first with a 2 yard run giving the home team the lead, Valley scooped up a fumble five minutes into the second and found the end zone for the 7-6 lead. The half ended with the same score. Desert got on the board first in the third quarter with an Anthony Ellison 14 yard run. De'Abrie Smith found Trevon Williams in the end zone for the 2 point conversion to put COD on top 14-7. Four minutes later, Valley blocked a punt and recovered in on the COD 10. After a great defensive stand the Monarchs only got three point out of the trip to the red zone. COD held on to the lead 14-10. Valley held the Roadrunners on the next possession and COD had to punt it away. Valley returned the punt 65 yards to the house to take the lead for good. They would tack on the late touchdown for a 23-14 win.

Smith ended the night with 132 yards through the air. Anthony Ellison totaled 59 yards on the ground on 12 carries and Reginald Macon had 95 yards receiving on six catches. The Roadrunners fall to 0-2 on the year. They are on the road next Saturday at West LA. That will be a 1:00 PM kickoff.
