COD Men’s Basketball wraps up non-Conference play at Chaffey Tournament

COD (1-12) played two excellent opponents, falling to Chaffey and Glendale in the Chaffey Tournament at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga.

The Roadrunners opened up the Chaffey Tournament with a game against the host team, the Chaffey College Panthers (11-7). They had a challenging first half with the Panthers, 51-23 at the break, and even though they had a stronger second half, struggled to grab a lead, falling 103-59.

Desert received some mentionable performances from starting sophomore guard Philippe Salawa (Fontana AB Miller), freshman forward Arion Stevenson (Moreno Valley Canyon Springs) and freshman guard Andre Allen (Chino Don Lugo). Salawa grabbed 19 points going 5 of 15 from the field connecting on two shots from 3-point range and shooting 7 of 9 from the charity stripe and leading the team with nine rebounds. Stevenson went 5 of 15 from the field going 2 of 2 from the free-throw line with four rebounds, and Allen came off the bench to rack up 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals shooting 4 of 10 from the field. Freshman forward Sylvester Franklin (Palm Springs H.S.) also added nine points off the bench going 3 of 7 from the field, in the opener.

Desert faced the Glendale Vaqueros in a closer matchup for the second game of the tournament, down by seven going into the break 42-35, playing a stronger second half, scoring over the Vaqueros, 44-42, just not enough to take the lead with the home side falling, 84-79.

Salawa with another strong performance led the team with 27 points, seven rebounds and two assists going 10 of 22 shooting from the field with 6 of 7 points from the charity stripe. Allen also had another strong game contributing 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field with 4 of 8 from three-point range and 5 of 8 from the free-throw line, adding four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Freshman forward Joseph Fowler (Rohnert Park Rancho Cotate) came off the bench to contribute 10 points with six rebounds shooting 3 of 7 from the field in the consolation game.
