COD Men’s Golf finishes 2nd at PCAC Finals, Heurtin snags lowest score of 2019

COD wrapped up the 2019 regular season with a tough tournament, as the team played two grueling rounds of golf, with Clement Heurtin shooting his best round of the year in the second round and the Roadrunners collecting an automatic bid to the SoCal Finals.

The Roadrunners sent five participants to the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) Finals, which was hosted at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside, with two rounds of golf on Monday to decide a team and individual Conference Champion. The Roadrunners were the reigning Conference title holders, but it would have required a complete collapse by the Conference leaders, the Palomar Comets of San Marcos for Desert to catch the Comets in the title race.

With the team title not really in doubt and with a second place finish, the Roadrunners were guaranteed an automatic qualifier into the CCCAA SoCal Regional Final at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills on May 6th, the real battle was for the individual title. A match-up between a player from Palomar and sophomore Clement Heurtin (Nantes (FR) NDTA) would be decided on this day, but it started out as a disaster for Heurtin.

In the first round, Heurtin tied his worst round of the season, a nine-over 81, then rebounded in gigantic way in the second round, by shooting his best round of the season, a four-under 68. Unfortunately, he ended up missing the individual Conference title by 0.3 strokes, a total averaged out over the course of the 12 round Conference schedule. The second place finish netted Heurtin his second consecutive All-Conference selection.

Freshman Josh Lumgair (Calgary (AB) Academy) struggled in the first round, joining teammate Heurtin with a nine-over 81, but rebounded nicely, shooting his second-best round of the season, nailing a four-over 76 for the fifth time in 2019 and landing an All-Conference selection.

Sophomore Michael Choma (La Quinta H.S.) shot an 82 in both the first and second rounds, and based on his total average score over the course of the 12 round Conference schedule, Choma would also be named to the All-Conference team.

Freshman Bailey Spivak (Palm Desert H.S.) collected a total score of 176 over the course of the two rounds and sophomore Maxime Faure (Deauville (FR) Lycee Andre Malraux) wrapped up the top five for the Roadrunners with a total score of 181.
