COD Men’s Soccer brings down the Olympians, 2-1

COD (1-2-2) picked a good time for their first win of the 2017 season as they opened up Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play with a huge win over a tough San Diego Mesa Olympians (2-1-2) team, 2-1.

In the first half both teams fought to a 0-0 draw, but each team had their chances as the Olympians took 10 shots, two on goal and the Roadrunners took 12 shots, four on goal. No bigger save to keep Desert out of the net then in the 31st minute as freshman midfielder Marco Aguilar (Rancho Mirage H.S.) unleashed a shot, forcing the Mesa keeper to fully extend to protect the upper left corner of the net and punch away the shot attempt.

The second half was explosive as the Roadrunners set the table for what looked to be an incredible 45 minutes of soccer. In the 54th minute, Desert lobbed in a shot from the midfield, which was picked up by Aguilar and poked to freshman midfielder Isaac Vargas (Indio Shadow Hills) who found himself in front of the net, pounding a shot past the Olympians keeper and giving the home side an impressive 1-0 lead. 

Freshman starting goal keeper Jorge Cañedo (Palm Springs H.S.) played 64 minutes in net leaving a clean sheet intact as freshman keeper Michael Cruz (Thermal Desert Mirage) subbed in to take his place in net. In the 74th minute, the Olympians equalized on a corner kick, tying the game at 1-1.

In the 88th minute the Roadrunners were awarded a penalty kick as sophomore midfielder Jesus Murillo Perez (Thermal Coachella Valley) once again capitalized on the opportunity, as he poked a shot into the lower left hand corner of the net, giving Desert a 2-1 advantage.
