2018 Season in Review - COD Men's Tennis

COD wrapped up the 2018 season at the CCCAA Individual State Finals, winning the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) title, the individual Conference title and the doubles Conference title.

Under third-year head coach Ken Thomas, Desert finished the regular season 15-3 overall and undefeated in PCAC play with a record of 12-0.

The Roadrunners placed two individual players in the "Round of 32" at the CCCAA Individual State Finals which took place at the Ojai 118th Annual Tennis Tournament, with freshman Kyryll Kryvchun (Vancouver (BC) Learning Network) securing the individual number two seed and sophomore Dimitrije Vukovic (Burnaby (BC) Moscrop Secondary) fighting his way through two preliminary rounds.

Kryvchun rolled out of the individual "Round of 64" winning, 6-0; 6-0, easily moving on to the "Round of 32" as the number two seeded player. Blasting past a player from Ventura College, 6-2; 6-1 and onto the "Round of 16" to face off with the number 12 seeded player, taking down the participant from Riverside City College, 6-0; 6-4 to move into the State Quarterfinals. Kryvchun would meet the number seven seeded player, falling in straight sets to the player from Cerritos College who would eventually go on to win the CCCAA State Individual Championship, 6-0; 6-4.

Kryvchun and doubles teammate, freshman Brian Johnson (Palm Springs H.S.), were awarded the number three seed overall in the doubles bracket, so they were given a "Round of 128" bye. In the "Round of 64," they were matched up with a team from Orange Coast College and slammed them in straight sets 6-1; 6-1. Unfortunately, the team had to withdraw in the "Round of 32."

Johnson opened up in the "Round of 128," falling in straight sets to an opponent from Saddleback College, 6-3; 6-2.

Vukovic advanced out of the individual "Round of 128" winning, 6-4; 4-6; 6-0 and moved out of the "Round of 64" winning, 6-3; 2-6; 6-3. Unfortunately, his run would end in the "Round of 32" as Vukovic faced off with the number 11 seed overall, a player from Santa Barbara City College, falling, 6-3; 6-0.

Vukovic and doubles teammate, sophomore Joau Luiz Zillo Prado (São Paulo (Brazil) Ateneu), did advance out of the doubles "Round of 64" as the number 11 seed, winning 6-3; 6-3, but the team fell in the doubles "Round of 32" to the team from Folsom Lake College, the number 5 seed overall, in a hotly contested match, 6-2; 1-6; 10-6.

The doubles team of sophomore Jakob Dvorken (Ridgewood, NJ) and freshman Joshua Bailin (La Quinta H.S.) knocked off the number seven ranked team out of LA Pierce College in a huge upset, 6-4; 2-6; 13-11, which concluded with a marathon third and final set. The team fell in the "Round of 64" to the number two seeded team in the tournament, out of Chabot College, 6-1; 7-5.

On the singles side, Dvorken advanced out of the individual "Round of 128," knocking off his opponent from De Anza College, 6-4; 6-3, but fell to an opponent from Irvine Valley in the "Round of 64," the number six ranked player in the tournament, 6-2; 6-0.
