COD Softball rolls in sweep of the Tartars, 7-3 & 11-0

COD (2-7) collected their first pair of wins for 2017, smashing the Compton Tartars (0-7), 7-3 and 11-0.

In game one, Desert took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman left fielder Anissa Madrid (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second base, freshman third baseman Rebecca Alford (Thermal Coachella Valley) took a one out single to left, which moved Madrid to third base. Sophomore right handed starting pitcher Angelika Cabanyog (Indio Shadow Hills) would punish a double to left, clearing the bases and giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.

Desert added three more runs in the bottom of the second as sophomore short stop Taylor Stone (Palm Desert H.S.) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk by freshman first baseman Keana Tolentino (Cathedral City H.S.). After Stone stole third base, Madrid clobbered a double, clearing the bases and scoring two more runs. Sophomore center fielder Malissa Nielsen (Palm Desert H.S.) would join the hit parade, going double-double as she cleared a two bagger to left, scoring Madrid and giving the Roadrunners a commanding 5-0 lead.

Compton would make it close as they added three runs in the top of the third, but Desert would not allow that to continue without responding with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third. Sophomore left fielder Darbie Catalfamo (Indio Shadow Hills) led off the inning with a walk and was moved to second on a bunt sacrifice by sophomore right fielder Amanda Martinez (Indio H.S.). Catalfamo would head home on a single to center by Stone, giving Desert a 6-3 lead.

Cabanyog would wrap up the scoring for Desert in the bottom of the fifth as she came home on an infield error, put in play by sophomore second baseman Yizel Nunez (Beaumont H.S.).

Madrid went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Cabanyog went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI's in game one. Alford went 2 for 4 with a run scored and Stone went 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI in the win.

Game two was a season's worth of frustration unleashed on the Tartars, as Desert shut out and punished Compton for 11 runs in a 5 inning mercy.

Cabanyog hit a two out triple in the bottom of the first and then darted home on the same play when the second baseman misplayed the relay, giving Desert an early 1-0 lead.

Then the aluminum came out in force, as the Roadrunners rolled up five runs in the second inning and five more runs in the third inning to blow the game wide open.

Alford walked twice and scored twice and "Moo" Nielsen went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Cabanyog went 2 for2 with two runs scored and Stone went 1 for 1 with two walks, two RBI's and a run scored. Martinez went 1 for 2 with two RBI's and freshman right fielder Lexie Jackson (La Quinta H.S.) went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
