COD Softball splits double header with the Tartars, 3-8 & 9-6

COD (5-12) played a non-Conference double header with the Compton Tartars (10-14), falling in game one 8-3, but getting the split in game two, winning, 9-6. 

In game one, the Tartars jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first and two more runs in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Over the next three innings, Roadrunners freshman right handed starting pitcher Valerie Rojo (Indio H.S.) shut down Compton.

The Tartars would add another run in the top of the sixth, then Desert would get onto the board in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman right fielder Mya Martinez (Indio Shadow Hills) led off the inning with a single to right and sophomore first baseman Saki Hirata (Tokushima (Japan) Joto) clobbered a double to center. Martinez would head home on a sacrifice fly to right by freshman catcher Monique Zaragoza (Indio H.S.), making the score 6-1, with Compton leading.

Compton would add two more runs in the top of the seventh, but Desert would respond with a couple runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman second baseman Tatiana Martinez (Thermal Coachella Valley) would reach on a one out error by the Tartars short stop and then reach third when sophomore third baseman Rebecca Alford (Thermal Coachella Valley) would get on base on an error by the Compton third baseman. Freshman center fielder Vanessa Madera (Thermal Coachella Valley) would bring home Tatiana Martinez on a single to center field and Mya Martinez would bring Alford home on a single.

The next home match for College of the Desert Softball will be on March 21st at 3p, where they will host a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match versus the San Diego City Knights. Hope to see you there!
