COD Softball allows big first inning, falls to Wolverines, 8-3

COD (9-20; 2-12) gave up five runs in the top of the first, punctuated by a two-run home run, but later made a game of it, as the home side got close, but fell to the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (14-22; 4-10), 8-3.

The Wolverines would get on to the scoreboard first, as they sent ten players to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five runs, including a two-run home run to left field. When the dust settled, San Bernardino Valley had a 5-0 lead.

Then freshman right handed starting pitcher Tatiana Martinez (Thermal Coachella Valley) really settled down as she mowed down the Wolverines lineup for the next four innings.

Desert would respond with a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore third baseman Rebecca Alford (Thermal Coachella Valley) scored on an infield single to the San Bernardino Valley short stop by freshman right fielder Kaitlin Manning (Palm Desert Xavier Prep). Freshman first baseman Monique Zaragoza (Indio H.S.) would head home on a fielder's choice by Martinez, to get the Roadrunners within three, 5-2.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines would score three more runs in the top of the sixth and while Desert would add one more run in the bottom half of the sixth, on a Martinez single to center, scoring Zaragoza, it would not be enough.

Next home game for College of the Desert Softball will be "Sophomore Day" on Tuesday, April 24th at 3 p.m., where they will conclude Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play by hosting the Southwestern Jaguars of Chula Vista. Hope to see you there.
