COD Softball fights hard in 5 inning loss to #6 Comets, 21-1

COD (17-16; 8-7) put a run across in the first and then remained hitless until the fifth as the Palomar Comets of San Marcos (29-5; 13-1) proved why they are the #6 team in the State, defeating the Roadrunners, 21-1 in 5 innings.

The Comets would open the top of the first, scoring 5 runs before the second out was recorded and when the dust settled, Palomar stood on an 8-0 lead midway through the first inning, but Desert would not stand for their home field to be sullied in such a way and responded with a little offense of their own.

Freshman second baseman and leadoff batter, Jacqueline Bolha (Yucca Valley H.S.), grabbed a walk to start things off, then sophomore short stop Briana Alcorn (Indio H.S.) doubled to center, as Bolha scampered home to score for Desert.

Unfortunately, that would be it for the Roadrunners, as Palomar pitchers struck out 10 of the next 12 Desert batters.

The Comets would add a run in the second and four more runs in the third, then sophomore right handed starting pitcher Areli Moreno (Indio H.S.) sat down the Palomar top-of-the-lineup in order in the fourth.

Palomar would plate eight more runs in the top of the fifth, all runs scoring with one out, before a merciful "runner left early" occurred at second base and the third out was a strike out.

Desert would try to make things interesting in the bottom half of the fifth, as the leadoff batter reached on an error by the Palomar third baseman, who bobbled a routine chopper to her. The next batter would hit a slow roller back to the pitcher, who got the lead runner out at second base, but a wild pitch put a Roadrunner in scoring position with one out.

Sophomore first baseman Mya Martinez (Indio Shadow Hills) would clobber a one out double to left field, but freshman left fielder Giselle Maldonado (Rancho Mirage H.S.) was gunned down at the plate.
