COD Women’s Basketball concludes 2017 season with victory over the Wolverines, 60-53

COD (5-21; 2-6) end their 2016-17 season on a high note as they took an early lead and had to hold on for dear life, eventually holding on to a hard fought win over the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (1-23; 0-8), 60-53.

Desert led by as much as 16 with 5:09 left in the first quarter, when the Roadrunners had a 17-1 lead, then San Bernardino Valley went on a 10-2 run to close out the first quarter. Both teams knew that this game was going to be close as the Wolverines climbed back into the game, using a 9-0 run to close out the first half and the Roadrunners found themselves down one, 30-29 at halftime.

Desert would open the second half with freshman starting guard Mercades Young (Moreno Valley Vista Del Lago) hitting a jump shot to give the Roadrunners a 31-30 advantage and while the game would be tied four more times, Desert would never again relinquish the lead.

Sophomore starting forward Lexie Jackson (La Quinta H.S.), playing her final game in a Desert uniform, collected her 10th double-double of the season, scoring 18 points, on 8 of 21 shooting and grabbing 17 boards. Jackson added another block to her already impressive 2016-17 season.

Young contributed 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting, leading the team in steals with three and sophomore starting forward Sara Edwards (Palm Desert H.S.) added 10 points on 4 of 10 shooting and was a perfect 2 for 2 from the free throw line.

Sophomore starting forward Jerrica Perez (Indio Shadow Hills) added six points on 2 of 7 shooting, going 2 for 5 from beyond three-point range and leading the team in assists with five.
