COD Women’s Basketball welcomes new head coach

COD will officially welcome in their new Women's Basketball coach, Dr. Timi Brown, on June 11, she is looking to get the program back into the post season for the first time since 1999.

Coach Brown has been actively involved in college athletics as a head coach, instructor and administrator at various institutions for over twenty-eight years. Over the past two years she was the head assistant Women's Basketball coach at Fullerton College and then a year prior, was the assistant at Irvine Valley College. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Arizona where she was a scholarship student-athlete with Women's Basketball.

In an interview, posted on the COD Athletics Instagram account, Brown commented on recruiting so far, "You know it's decent. It's always difficult when you take over a program. I've had to recruit some of the players, in terms of, just getting them to return, change is difficult for young people, so that was my first priority, is really trying to tap into them and let them know that things are going to be okay."

Brown graduated with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology in 1991, and left the U of A as the all-time leading scorer in Women's Basketball history. Upon graduation, she began her coaching career as a head basketball coach at San Pasqual High School in San Diego, California, where the team won two southern section conference championships.

After earning a master's degree in athletic administration from the University of Northern Colorado, Coach Brown pursued her dream of becoming a college basketball coach. She served as an assistant coach at various community colleges for four years; and obtained her first head coaching position at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California. Brown's first season at MPC produced a southern section Coast conference championship as well as the conference player of the year.

In 2001, Brown became the Head Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas. Her teams at Odessa were highly competitive, and in 2003-04 the team went 25-5, winning the Western Junior Athletic Conference title. Many of the players from 2001-2004 graduated with academic honors, as well as earned all-conference and ultimately received scholarships to Division I and II institutions.

After leaving Odessa in 2004, Brown was named the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado, where the team played in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Brown's teams were not only successful on the court, but in the classroom as well, achieving a team 3.0 GPA in all five years. While at Mesa State, she coached a "Freshman of the Year," "Player of the Year," All-conference players and academic All-Americans. Over five successful seasons at Mesa State College, Brown decided to pursue her doctorate degree in higher education.

Brown returned to the community college level where she coached at Glendale College in Glendale, Arizona. While at Glendale, her teams were highly competitive, achieved success in the classroom, and multiple players successfully transferred to four year institutions; one player is currently playing professionally in Europe.

Brown shared, "I chose COD just because of the untapped potential, that I think is out here in the Desert, I think there is good support in the Administration. I know our Athletic Director, Gary, has a great reputation, what he's doing, I think the Community College, fastest growing Community College in California, so I think there's just some great opportunities. And the facilities, the gym is phenomenal, so what basketball coach doesn't appreciate that? So, I just think there are some great opportunity here and I'm excited to be a part of it."

In 2014, Brown earned her doctorate in higher education leadership after completing her dissertation on student-athlete academic support services. Over the last twenty years Brown has been teaching and developing curriculum in athletic administration management, intercollegiate athletics and leadership, student-athlete development, coaching theory and athletic sociology, at a variety of institutions. In addition to her education, Brown is a nationally certified strength and conditioning coach as well as a health and fitness instructor.

In her free time, Brown enjoys travelling, playing basketball and beach volleyball, strength training, and running with her dogs.
