COD Women’s Basketball pushes past Griffins, 71-54

COD (2-4) grabbed their second win of the season, dominating from the beginning and not looking back as Anastasia Reagins grabbed her fourth double-double and the Roadrunners defeated the Grossmont Griffins of La Mesa (0-5), 71-54.

The Roadrunners took a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 42-21 lead at the break. Grossmont would respond in the second half, closing the gap, slightly, as both teams ended the third quarter, with Desert up, 56-44, but the Roadrunners would close out the game strong, 71-54.

Four of the five starters for Desert scored in double figures as they impressed the home crowd. Leading the way for the Roadrunners was freshman starting guard Jelina Mijares (Temecula Rancho Christian) who scored 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting and freshman starting guard Erika Barrera (Thermal Desert Mirage) who scored 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting including grabbing a team leading seven steals and five assists in the win.

Sophomore starting guard Marisa Givens (Palm Desert H.S.) and freshman starting center Anastasia Reagins (Palm Springs H.S.) both added 11 points. Givens on 5 of 13 shooting with five assists and Reagins with her fourth double-double of the 2019-20 season as she snagged 12 total rebounds and led the team with four blocked shots.

Freshman guard Annabelle Amador (Indio Shadow Hills) led all bench scorers to add six points, going 3 for 4 from the free throw line in the win.
