COD Women’s Golf grabs 6th place finish at Desert Invitational, Veikune is 3rd

COD Women's Golf began the 2023 season hosting the 2nd annual Desert Invitational, getting stuck in the middle of a heat wave during the two-day event, the team finished 6th and sophomore Lehapi Veikune Taungahihifo (Rancho Mirage H.S.) collected a 3rd place individual finish.

The Roadrunners sent four participants to its first event. The heat was on full display as August high temps for day one reached 113 and on day two, reached 115 as Desert opened 2023 at home at the par-72 The Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert. The 2nd annual event featured four of the eight teams that were in the 2022 CCCAA Women's Golf State Championship, including the State Champions as well as the Individual State Champion from 2022.

Desert would finish with 347 points on day one and 360 on the final day, totaling 707 points for the tournament, which was 74 strokes ahead of seventh place finisher, the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs of Stockton. The Modesto Pirates would win the event with 661 points. Veikune led the way for the Roadrunners, shooting an even-par 72 on day one and then shooting a six-over 78 on day two, for a total score of 150, enough to finish 3rd individually. Sophomore Jensen Kelly (Imperial (SK) School) would shoot an 82 on day one and an 88 on day two for a total of 170, enough to tie for 17th individually with her teammate freshman Kayla Speer (Yucaipa H.S.), who shot an 86 and an 84. Sophomore Samantha Miller (Valley Center H.S.) shot a 107 and a 110 for a total of 217 over the course of the two-day tournament.
