Women's Soccer Opens 2015 Campaign With 3-2 Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - College of the Desert women's soccer used two goals from freshman midfielder Monica Monay (Palm Desert, CA / Cathedral City HS) to hold on for their first win of the 2015 season, as they defeated Cuesta yesterday evening by a score of 3-2.

Monay opened the scoring for COD with her tally in the 17th minute, coming via a penalty kick.  Cuesta answered with a goal from Gillian Stargensky late in the first half, and the teams entered  the break knotted at 1-1.

Sophomore midfielder Sarah Felix (Indio, CA / Shadow Hills HS) regained the lead at 2-1 for COD in the 72nd minute, as she was set up on a nice place by fellow sophomore midfielder, Gabriela Lewis (Indio, CA / La Quinta HS).

The Lady Roadrunners' relentless attack struck again quickly after, as Monay's second goal of the day just two minutes later increased the margin to 3-1.  Freshman midfielder Vanessa Caudillo (Indio, CA / Shadow Hills HS) provided the assist on what would turn out to be the game-winning goal, as Cuesta's Moniqeu Orozco scored in the last minute to make it a 3-2 final.

Freshmen Brianna Lazzarini (Indio, CA / La Quinta HS) and Britney Vargas (Palm Desert, CA / La Quinta HS) split time in goal for COD, each making two saves.

The Lady Roadrunners (1-0, 0-0) will have a quick turnaround, as they travel  to take on Allen Hancock at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
