COD Women’s Soccer pushes past the Eagles, 2-1

COD (3-5-1; 1-1) got back on track in IEAC play, as they grabbed a solid victory over a pesky team, the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles of Menifee (2-6-1; 0-2), 2-1.

Desert got onto the board fast as 1:21 into the game, the Roadrunners received a corner kick and sophomore forward Jaidah Martin (Rancho Mirage H.S.) dropped a shot in front of the net and sophomore midfielder April Contreras (Palm Desert H.S.) snagged her second goal of the season, kneeing the ball past the keeper and giving the home side a 1-0 advantage. It was Martin's fourth assist of the season.

That goal would hold for the entirety of the first half as sophomore starting goal keeper Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley) and the defense in front of her kept the Eagles off of the scoreboard.

In the 52nd minute, a foul by Mt. San Jacinto led to a direct free kick for freshman forward Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.), who promptly converted that opportunity into her team leading fifth goal of the season to give Desert a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles would add a penalty kick in the 65th minute, but the Roadrunners would keep their opponents off of the board for the rest of the afternoon.

The next game for Desert is on Tuesday, October 4 at home against the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest. The Roadrunners have a 4-0 record overall against the Coyotes, including a 2-0 record in Palm Desert. The last time these two teams met was in 2014, where the Roadrunners swept the season series, winning at home 3-0 and on the road 6-3.
