COD Women’s Soccer: Castillo grabs 6 goals as Roadrunners bowl over the Coyotes, 11-0

COD (4-5-1; 2-1) collected one of their most lopsided victories in team history as freshman forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) made Desert history, scoring six goals in a single game, as the Roadrunners grabbed a lopsided victory over the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest (1-10-1; 0-2), 11-0.

Castillo tied teammate, freshman forward Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.), for the team lead in goals in one afternoon, scoring a first half hat trick, then repeating the feat in the second half.

Sophomore starting goal keeper Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley) shared the third clean sheet of the season for the Roadrunners with teammate freshman goal keeper Naomi Garcia-Marquez (Rancho Mirage H.S.).

Cerro Coso traveled with 12 players, limiting their opportunities to make subs, but Desert has owned this series since 2013, when the Coyotes added Women's Soccer. The Roadrunners have an all-time goal differential of 42-3 with Cerro Coso, to go with a 5-0 record against the Coyotes.

The Roadrunners got onto the scoreboard early and often in the first half as they found the back of the net in the 6th minute when freshman defender Daniela Iniguez (Thermal Coachella Valley) pushed a pass up the right side of the field and found sophomore midfielder April Contreras (Palm Desert H.S.) in front of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, freshman midfielder Fabiana Zavala (Thermal Desert Mirage) found freshman forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) just inside the 18 yard box and Castillo lifted a shot into the roof of the net, giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.

In the 11th minute, freshman defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) spotted Castillo from her center back position and lobbed a pass forward and Castillo did the rest, punching a shot into the back of the net and the rout was on, as Desert collected a 3-0 lead.

In the 18th minute, sophomore forward Jaidah Martin (Rancho Mirage H.S.) took a corner and placed the ball perfectly in front of Iniguez who was standing in the goal box, and Iniguez poked a shot past the Coyotes keeper and with less than half of the first half completed, Desert had a 4-0 lead.

Castillo would grab her first half hat trick by the 27th minute on a spectacular assist from Guerrero, making the score 5-0.

In the 40th minute, freshman defender Andrea Lopez-Galvan (Thermal Desert Mirage) moved a ball forward to freshman midfielder Alejandra Fernandez (Cathedral City H.S.) who did the rest, as Fernandez threaded her way through the Coyotes defense and put a shot on net which trickled across the goal line, giving Desert a 6-0 lead.

In injury time of the first half, freshman midfielder Jaid Flores (Cathedral City H.S.) made her presence felt as she found freshman midfielder Denise Hernandez (Palm Springs H.S.) on the left side of the goal box, where Hernandez ran to the right, across the goal mouth and crushed a shot into the lower left side of the net just before the official blew his whistle to indicate halftime.

Desert began the second half faster than they began the first half, as it only took the Roadrunners 74 seconds to grab their eighth goal of the afternoon, when Contreras and freshman midfielder Amanda West (Palm Desert H.S.) found Castillo for her fourth goal on the day.

In the 51st minute, Zavala helped Murguia get on the board with her sixth goal of the season and in the 54th minute, Zavala and Contreras made sure that Castillo would be back in that "team leaders in goals scored" conversation, by helping Castillo score her fifth goal of the day.

In the 58th minute, West created an opportunity by passing to sophomore midfielder Yesenia Torres (Thermal Desert Mirage), who promptly found Castillo in front of the net for her sixth goal of the game.

The 11 goal victory ties their largest home victory in program history, sharing that title with an 11-0 demolition of the Cuyamaca Coyotes of El Cajon in the Roadrunners inaugural season of Women's Soccer in 1997, and followed up the next year with an 11-0 home win over the Imperial Valley Arabs. Surprisingly, the 11-0 win over Cerro Coso is not the largest in the rivalry, the Roadrunners wrapped up the 2013 season in Ridgecrest, defeating the Coyotes, 14-0.

The next game for Desert is on Friday, October 11 at the Norco Mustangs. The Roadrunners first played the Mustangs in 2014 and are looking for their first win in the series, both teams have played twice and both of those games were on the road. The next home game for Desert is on Friday, October 18 against the Victor Valley Rams of Victorville. The Roadrunners last faced the Rams in 2015, winning in Palm Desert 3-2.
