COD Women's Soccer takes down the Comets on Sophomore Day, 7-0

COD (7-8-4; 4-4-2) hosted Palomar College (2-12-4; 2-8-2) on Thursday November 7th, marking Sophomore Day.

On a beautiful day for a soccer match and the final home game for the 2019 season, the Lady Roadrunners put its scoring shoes on for this affair. It was also the final Home game in the 2 year career of six Lady Roadrunners who have been dedicated to the COD program Jenny Salcido (Thermal Coachella Valley), team captain Yesenia "Pucca" Torres (Thermal Desert Mirage), Jaidah Martin (Rancho Mirage), April Contreras (Palm Desert), Araceli Jimenez-Alonzo Thermal Desert Mirage), Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley).

The Roadrunners came out quickly and took the lead, in the 6th minute when a cross from the right back Faith Palmer (Yucca Valley) went to left back Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta) with a quick dribble down the left flank Guerrero fired a shot hitting the far side of the net for her 1st college of her career. Four minutes later saw a very similar goal from sophomore April Contreras (Palm Desert), as she took a pass from fellow sophomore Jaidah Martin (Rancho Mirage), Contreras rocketed a shot from the right side hitting the far side net. Martin would then net her 1st goal of 2019 when she scored on a Penalty Kick in the 28th minute after a COD player was taken down in the box. Just one minute later sophomore Jenny Salcido (Thermal Coachella Valley), would combine with freshman Denise Hernandez (Palm Springs) for a nice give and go with Hernandez putting it past a diving Palomar Goalkeeper. The 1st half would see one more goal in the 43rd minute as freshman Amanda West (Palm Desert) would take a cross from freshman Jasmine Castillo (Indio shadow Hills) and head it past the Palomar keeper for her 1st college career goal.

After a halftime ceremony honoring the group of student / athletes, the Lady Roadrunners picked up where they left off scoring the in the 51st minute as Ashley Murguia (Indio) would take a pass from freshman Yesenia Reyes (Thermal Desert Mirage), go on a dribble by several defenders and beat a diving Palomar keeper. Then in the 56th minute Murguia take a wonderfully placed cross from Martin and back heel it into the net, notching Murguia's 2nd goal on the afternoon and Martin's 2nd assist.

In the goal box Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley) and Naomi Garcia-Marquez (Rancho Mirage), would combine for the Roadrunners 5th shutout on the season, marking the most shutouts the Lady Roadrunners have compiled in a season in over a decade.

Tuesday November 12th COD will travel to Victor Valley College for an Inland Empire Athletic Conference contest with a 3:00pm kickoff.
