COD Women’s tennis wraps up 2019 season in CCCAA Quarter Finals

COD Women's Tennis sent three pairs and Claudia Stepein to compete at the CCCAA Singles and Doubles State Championships held at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club, beginning Friday April, 26th.

In singles play for Desert, sophomore Claudia Stepien (Palm Desert H.S.) was the sole Roadrunner competing for a singles title. Stepien was given a bye in the round of 128 and was ranked third in her bracket. In the round of 64, Stepien would meet Yesenia Palacios from Cerritos College, defeating the Falcon impressively, 6-1 and 6-0. In the round of 32, Stepien continued her take down of the field, defeating Elina Grigoryan from Sierra College, 6-1 and 6-0. Stepien would then face off against Riverside City's Torrey Mateljan in the round of 16, knocking off the Tiger with a same score of, 6-1 and 6-0. In the Quarter Finals, Stepien would meet her toughest opponent in Nicole Knickerbocker, from Orange Coast College. Stepien would battle throughout the match, falling just short as the Pirate took the first set, 6-4 and would eventually seal the win, as Stepien completed her run in the Singles State Championship, losing 7-5 in the final set of the match.

The Roadrunners sent three pairs to compete for a doubles title in Ojai. The team of freshman Vanessa Rodriguez (Palm Springs H.S.) and freshman Adriana Vargas (La Quinta H.S.) fell in the round of 128 as they faced the team of Keressa Garland and Tanya Thompson from Venura College, 7-5 and 6-3. The team of sophomore Annaya Zubick (Palm Springs H.S.) and sophomore Andrea Rapan (Thermal Coachella Valley) were also knocked off in the round of 128, by the team of Iren Feher and Fanny Harling from Santa Monica, 6-2 and 6-2.

The team of Stepien and freshman Karla Munoz (Rancho Mirage H.S.) recieved a bye for the round of 128 and placed 10th in their bracket. They would go on to blank the team of Steffi Campos and Lily Guslistova from Sacramento College, taking the win in the round of 64, 6-0 and 6-0. In the round of 32, Stepien and Munoz knocked off the team of Ariyana Ash and Ashley Le in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-5. Stepien and Munoz would end their run in the round of 16, as they fell against the team of Madi Giese and Lima Ito from El Camino College, in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0.
