COD Women’s Volleyball falls in heartbreaker to Eagles, 3-1

COD (16-4; 4-3) had an opportunity to avenge an early season loss and stay in command of their playoff future, but an injury plagued lineup and some key defensive missteps proved to be the difference, as the Roadrunners fell to the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (17-3; 6-1), 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 24-26, 25-18).

While the Roadrunners are celebrating their best season in over a decade, breaking bad mojo against opponent's left-and-right, they will have to take care of business over the remaining five games and receive some help from other teams to wedge themselves into a packed list of playoff contending programs.

Sophomore setter Ashtyn Lyneis (Palm Springs H.S.) led the team with 29 assists, led the team with 13 digs and had 5 kills and sophomore middle blocker Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) had 10 kills, a solo block and an assist block.

The most recent time the Roadrunners defeated the Eagles was last season, in 2017, at home, 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 17-25, 25-21, and 15-11). The Roadrunners have a 39-18 record all-time against Mt. San Jacinto and a 20-9 record at home against the Eagles. Mt. San Jacinto opened up the 2018 season 11-0 and has since gone 6-3 since September 27.

Sophomore outside hitter Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) led the team with 11 kills, had 12 digs and led the team with 2 assist blocks and freshman outside hitter Kelsey Smith (Delta, BC South Delta Secondary) tied for the team lead with 2 solo blocks, had 7 kills and had 11 digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Mckenzie Bartlett (Redmond, OR Ridgeview) tied for the team lead with 2 solo blocks, had 4 kills and had 7 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Brooke Topliff (Rancho Mirage H.S.) led the team with 2 service aces.

The next home game for Desert is Sophomore Night, when they host the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (1-18; 1-6) on Friday, October 26, game starts at 5 p.m.
