COD Women's Beach Volleyball wins 2019 season opener, splits with Pirates and Vikings

COD travelled to Huntington Beach, splits against the Orange Coast Pirates and the Long Beach City Vikings.

In their first match of the 2019 season, the Roadrunners sank the Pirates, winning 3-2. In the "Three's" team, sophomore Shay Mesa (Indio Shadow Hills) and sophomore Nicole Svoboda (La Quinta H.S.) easily won in straight sets, 21-9 and 21-5. In the "Four's" team, sophomore Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and sophomore Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) also won, collapsing the Pirates in two sets, 21-9 and 21-9. Sealing the team victory for Desert was the "Five's" team of freshman Taylor Adair (Yucca Valley H.S.) and freshman Kathleen Geiberger (Palm Desert H.S.) who won 21-10 and 21-5. In the exhibition match, the "One's" team of sophomore Brooke Topliff (Rancho Mirage H.S.) and sophomore Jomarie Viloria (Rancho Mirage H.S.) finished off Orange Coast, 21-7 and 21-10.

The Roadrunners fought through the second match, but found a challenger in Long Beach City, losing 3-2. In the "Four's" team freshman Taylor Adair (Yucca Valley H.S.) and freshman Kathleen Geiberger (Palm Desert H.S.) clinched the first win for Desert, knocking off the Vikings 21-23, 21-15, and 15-7. In the last match of the day, in the "Five's" team, sophomore Baylie Dashner (La Quinta H.S.) and sophomore Emily Sundback (Rancho Mirage H.S.) battled for three sets, winning 21-18, 24-22, and 15-9. Although the Roadrunners fought throughout the event, sending three matches into the final set, the Vikings came out with the team win.

Next pair of home matches for College of the Desert Beach Volleyball will be Friday, February 22nd beginning at 10 a.m., at the Civic Center Park, where they will take on the Victory Valley Rams and the Glendale Vaqueros. Hope to see you there.
