COD Baseball: Alvarez signs letter with PLNU

COD Baseball sophomore center fielder Izayah Alvarez (Palm Desert H.S.) has signed a letter of intent with the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions.

The Palm Desert native, was named first team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in his sophomore season of 2019. He placed second in PCAC and led the Roadrunners in hits, collecting a total of 55 on the season. He also led the team in RBIs, by bringing 17 teammates across the plate this past season. He also collected 134 put outs, placing him 16th in the PCAC and second on his team. For the week of March 14th, he was named CCCBCA SoCal Player of the Week.

Alvarez commented on the reasons he chose to join the PLNU, stating, "The Sea Lions have a great baseball program. Grew up watching them and fell in love with the area, with the coaches."

Under second year head coach Chris Walters, the Roadrunners finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 6-34 and conference record of 4-20. The team was bestowed two first team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and two Honorable Mentions.

Alvarez also spoke about the support he received from College of the Desert, commenting, "COD all-in-all helped me, by putting myself out there, it was great to come here and have an opportunity to do that, and I'm really grateful."

Point Loma Nazarene University is located in San Diego, California. The Sea Lions are coached by Justin James, who returned to his Alma Mater to make his head coaching debut this past season. In 2019, PLNU completed the regular season with an overall record of 30-19 and conference record of 18-13, before heading into the NCAA playoffs, which begin May 16th, where they will face the Montana State Billings in La Jolla, California.
