COD Softball: Alcorn has perfect day at the plate, falls to Olympians, 4-2

COD (7-7; 2-1) received a great day at the plate from several players, but Briana Alcorn was 4 for 4 on the afternoon and the team would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but only got one run across home plate as the Roadrunners fell to the San Diego Mesa Olympians (12-5; 3-1), 4-2.

Both teams shared jabs as they attempted to figure out one another, but neither team could break through until the top of the third, when the Olympians scored a pair. Mesa would add another run in the fourth and a run in the fifth, to give the Olympians a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Desert responded with a score by sophomore short stop and leadoff hitter, Briana Alcorn (Indio H.S.) on a sacrifice bunt by freshman pinch hitter Andrea Torres (Rancho Mirage H.S.), to get close, 4-1.

The bottom of the seventh was crazy as the first two batters for the Roadrunners reached on singles to center, then the Olympians head coach had seen enough as the heart of the Desert order was coming to the plate, Mesa decided to change pitchers. The next Desert batter would strike out on a devastating drop ball, then freshman catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.) singled to center to load the bases with one out. Avila would go 2 for 4 on the afternoon.

The next batter struck out, but the bases were still loaded with two out, then a bizarre play at short stop as the next Desert batter, freshman second baseman Jacqueline Bolha (Yucca Valley H.S.), batting out of the five hole in the lineup, punched a shot to the Olympians short stop, who appeared to tag the runner moving from second to third. The Mesa player immediately started heading towards the foul line thinking the game was over, but alas the umpire did not see a tag from his vantage point and a Desert run came home.

The Roadrunners still had the bases loaded with two outs, but a run had come home, making the score 4-2. Unfortunately, the next Desert batter would strike out.

Freshman right handed starting pitcher Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.) would go 3 for 4 on the afternoon.
