COD Softball rolls up the Rams, 7-2

COD (18-16) guaranteed themselves their first above .500 finish since the 2014 season, after knocking off the Victor Valley Rams (5-27), 7-2.

Desert wrapped up their non-Conference schedule with the Rams, but it wasn't without a struggle as the game was a rescheduled match that had a one hour delay for umpires. Originally scheduled for noon on the hottest day of 2019, so far, the game began at 1 p.m.

The Desert Softball non-Conference schedule was hampered by inclement weather and a litany of rescheduled games, where the Roadrunners would go 10-9 over the course of that schedule with a quality win over LA Valley and Barstow during non-Conference play.

Desert would get onto the scoreboard first, plating four runs in the bottom of the first, giving some early support for freshman right handed starting pitcher Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.) in seeking her eleventh win of 2019.

Sophomore short stop and leadoff batter, Briana Alcorn (Indio H.S.), would scamper home on a double by freshman catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.) and freshman center fielder Carmina Camarena (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would score on a bunt single by Robinson. Sophomore third baseman Areli Moreno (Indio H.S.) would hit a bases clearing single, to give the Roadrunners a 4-0, all runs scoring before the first out was recorded.

The Rams would cut the lead in half, with a pair of runs in the top of the second to make the score 4-2, but Desert would respond with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, increasing the Roadrunners lead to 7-2.

Freshman first baseman Cassandra Camacho (Thermal Coachella Valley) would lead off the inning with a triple and would score when freshman left fielder Leilani Silva (Salton City West Shores) reached on an error by the Victor Valley second baseman. Silva would come around to score when the top of the lineup turned over and Alcorn hit a double. Camarena would double to score Alcorn and give the Roadrunners a 7-2 lead.
