COD Women’s Basketball participates in Santa Ana Tournament

COD (0-6) traveled to participate in the Santa Ana Tournament, Kaitlyn Cox collected a double-double and Alissa Munayco totaled 28 points for the tournament.

On Thursday, the Roadrunners faced the host team Santa Ana Dons (3-5) in the opening round of the tournament. Desert kept the game close in the first quarter, with the Dons outscoring the Roadrunners, 21-16. In the second quarter, both teams put up an even 14 points to end the half. The first half of the game Desert's aggressive play put them on the free throw line seven times, finishing the first half with 67.5% at the free throw line. The Roadrunners out rebounded Santa Ana completing the half with 31 boards.

Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Cox (La Quinta H.S.) collected a double-double, scoring 14 points, on 5 of 16 shooting and grabbing a career high 21 rebounds. The leading scorer for Desert was sophomore guard Alissa Munayco (Indio Shadow Hills) who went for 15 points, on 6 of 16 shooting and shot 2 of 9 from beyond three-point range. Desert finished the game out rebounding the Dons 65 to 45. Although the Roadrunners kept pace in the first half, and fought aggressively for boards, Santa Anta Ana received a huge third quarter as Desert could not stop their attack and the Dons took the game, 72-58.

On the consolation side of the bracket, Desert ran into Conference foe, the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (4-3). Sophomore guard Kiera Duran (Garden Grove Bolsa Grande) led the team in scoring, collecting 14 points, 3 of 7 shooting, while going 8 of 11 from the free throw line. Munyaco had another solid game, grabbing 13 points, 5 of 11 shooting and nailing three three-pointers. Sophomore forward Julie Rodriguez (Indio Shadow Hills) and Cox both contributed nine points each while Cox led the team in total boards with seven.

Desert would win the third quarter, but were unable to catch the Wolverines, finishing the game, 77-61.
