COD Women’s Basketball opens Winter Classic with win over Porterville, 52-48

COD (3-9) took one point deficit at halftime and turned it into a 21 point third quarter effort as the home side would hold on late against the Porterville Pirates (2-11), 52-48.

Desert would fall in the first quarter, 17-11, but rebounded nicely to win the second quarter 12-7, as the Pirates would take a 24-23 lead into the break. The Roadrunners would open up the second half aggressively, eventually going on a 13-2 run midway through the quarter, taking the third, 21-8. Porterville would respond, making the game close late, but even though the Pirates won the fourth, 16-8, Desert would take the game.

Freshman starting guard Geraldine Padua (Indio Shadow Hills) would lead all scorers with 21 points, on 4 of 13 shooting, but going an outstanding 13 for 21 from the free throw line on the night.

Sophomore starting guard Marisa Givens (Palm Desert H.S.) and freshman starting guard Jelina Mijares (Temecula Rancho Christian) would both add 11 points each, as Givens shot 4 of 10 from the field and Mijares went 3 of 9 from the field, going 4 of 6 from the charity stripe in the win.

Freshman starting guard Erika Barrera (Thermal Desert Mirage) would lead the team in steals with five and assists with four and freshman guard Trista Smith (Indio Shadow Hills) would come off of the bench to lead the team in total rebounds with seven on the night.
