COD Women’s Soccer knocks over the Knights, 5-2

COD (6-6-2) made it back to level on the season and Jiana Guerrero had her second multi-goal game of the season, as the Roadrunners pushed aside the San Diego City Knights (3-9-2), 5-2.

Freshman defender Yesenia Torres (Thermal Desert Mirage) got the Roadrunners onto the scoreboard first with her first goal of the 2018 season in the 13th minute, when she took a deflection off of the keeper and rifled a shot into the back of the net to give Desert an early 1-0 advantage.

Three minutes later, in the 16th minute, sophomore forward Jiana Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) got into the action as sophomore defender Taylor Doyle (La Quinta H.S.) found Jiana and she lifted a shot up over the keeper and it rolled into the net to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead. That lead would hold through until halftime.

Just as the second half kicked off, freshman forward Reanna Rivera (La Quinta H.S.)made her presence felt as she took a pass from Guerrero and moved from right to left in front of the Knights keeper and pounded a shot past the diving goalie to give Desert a 3-0 lead.

In the 72nd minute, San Diego City would score to bust up the shut out, but in the 80th minute, the Roadrunners would get that goal back thanks to freshman defender Alejandra Hernandez (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) finding sophomore midfielder Alexi Mejia (La Quinta H.S.) who bolgered the twine, giving Desert a 4-1 lead.

But less than 2 minutes later, the Knights would halve the lead by adding a second goal and now the effort became to preserve the win. And the Roadrunners would do just that as Mejia found Guerrero in the 83rd minute, giving the Roadrunners a 5-2 lead.

The Roadrunners hosted San Diego City for the first time since 2016, where Desert has never lost to the Knights and are 10-0 all-time record against them, including a 7-0 record in Palm Desert.

The next game for Desert is Tuesday, when they travel to the Southwestern Jaguars of Chula Vista on, October 16, the last time the Jaguars hosted Desert, which was in 2016, the game ended in a 3-1 Roadrunners victory, game starts at 3 p.m. The next home game for Desert is Friday, October 26 when they host the San Diego Miramar Jets, the last time the Jets visited the Desert, which was in 2017, the game ended in a hard fought 1-0 loss, game starts at 3 p.m.
