COD Women’s Soccer holds on for win over the Rams, 5-4

COD (5-6-2; 3-2) continued undefeated at home in Conference play as they held on for a crucial win over the Victor Valley Rams of Victorville (5-8-2; 1-4-1), 5-4.

This was a wild contest with back-and-forth scoring and deadly accurate Rams offensive attack, which resulted in four shots on goal against sophomore goal keeper Marqisha Zamudio-Ontiveros (Thermal Coachella Valley) and each one of those shots hitting the back of the net.

Desert would get on the scoreboard first, in the second minute, as freshman midfielder Isabel Alvarez (Indio Shadow Hills) found freshman midfielder Alejandra Fernandez (Cathedral City H.S.) for her second goal of the season, giving the home side an early 1-0 advantage. It was the third assist of the season for Alvarez.

In the 19th minute, Victor Valley equalized and five minutes later, the visitors took a 2-1 lead.

The Roadrunners would tie the game in the 33rd minute when freshman forward Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) pushed a pass through the legs of a Rams defender and Alvarez would clobber a shot past a diving Victor Valley keeper, for her fifth goal of the season. Both teams would go into halftime tied at 2-2.

The second half would prove to be just as exciting as the first half, as Desert would regain the lead seven minutes in when freshman defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) had a throw in which Alvarez headed into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead.

In the 60th minute, Desert added a much needed insurance goal as Murguia scored her seventh goal of the season, putting the Roadrunners up 4-2.

Victor Valley would get back to within one in the 66th minute and two minutes later, the Roadrunners got that goal back when Murguia scored her eighth goal of the season, putting Desert up 5-3.

In the 70th minute, the Rams would get back to within one goal, 5-4 and Desert would have to spend the next 20 minutes holding on.
