Alexander and Sablan Earn May Student Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to Katie Alexander from beach volleyball and Ivan Sablan from men's golf for earning the College of the Desert May Student Athletes of the Month honors.

Beach Volleyball sophomore Katie Alexander from Yucca Valley H.S., kicked off the month of May by securing the #13 seed in the SoCal Regionals, with her pairs partner, freshman Grace Abrams (Fountain Hills (AZ) H.S.). Opening up regionals, the Desert 1's team knocked off the #20 seeded 3's team from Orange Coast College in a three-set thriller, 16-21, 21-19 and 16-14. The win qualified the pair to attend the 3C2A State Championship at West Valley College. The team of Abrams/Alexander grabbed their #15 seed from the South and opened up play facing the #6 seed from the North, a pairs team from the Cabrillo Seahawks of Aptos. The Roadrunners would chase away the Seahawks in a three-set throw-down, 21-15, 16-21 and 19-17 in the 3C2A State Championship opener.

Men's Golf sophomore Ivan Sablan from Father Dueñas Memorial H.S. in Chalan-Pago-Ordot, Guam, was named the Orange Empire Conference MVP and led the way for the Roadrunners at the SoCal Regionals. Sablan, who shot a 6-over 77 in the first round, then rebounded beautifully to tie his lowest score of the season, shooting a 2-under 69 in the second round as Desert grabbed a second-place finish. At the 3C2A State Championship, Sablan shot a 3-over 76 in the first round, then tied his second-best score of the season, shooting a 1-under 72 in the second round.
