The College of the Desert Tournament started in 1987, opening the three day early February tournament defeating San Diego City 9-4 and Chaffey 10-3. In 1990, the tournament was renamed the Tim Patterson Memorial Tournament carried through 2003, returning from 2005 to 2010. Tim Patterson was a COD student athlete at the time of his passing (May 31, 1987) and the tournament was named in his honor.

In 2011, the Patterson Memorial Tournament was renamed in honor of Roadrunners coaching legend, David Buttles. Over his lengthy career spanning 15 seasons, from 1992 through 2007, Buttles collected a record of 291-307 (.486).
