COD Baseball celebrates Sophomore Day by racing past the Wolverines, 16-5

COD (23-14; 12-11) celebrated Sophomore Day by getting back into the playoff hunt, winning their fourth straight game and hitting their stride at the perfect time, as the Roadrunners grabbed a lopsided win over the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (18-21; 11-12), 16-5.

Thanks to their current winning streak, the Roadrunners have gone from "left for dead" to "on the bubble" for a post season berth. The top 24 teams in Southern California qualify and should Desert win out, the Roadrunners are within striking distance of returning to the 3C2A Playoffs for the second consecutive year.

Freshman right handed starting pitcher Braden Turner (Henderson (NV) Basic Academy) grabbed his fifth win of the season, tossing five innings and striking out five. Sophomore right handed relief pitcher Dylan Kints (Exeter (ON) South Huron District) and freshman right handed relief pitcher Ethan Penrod (Danville Monte Vista) wrapped up the game, splitting the final four innings, two innings a piece.

Sophomore short stop Jason Leon (La Quinta H.S.) went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a run batted in out of the leadoff spot and sophomore left fielder Joeseph Jimenez (Palm Desert H.S.) went 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored with an RBI out of the two hole. Sophomore center fielder Antonio Crews (Grayslake (IL) Central) went 4 for 5, for his second 4-hit game of the season, and sophomore first baseman Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert H.S.) went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Spencer Dickinson (Rancho Mirage H.S.) clobbered his fifth home run of the season, a grand slam in the fourth inning and sophomore catcher Tyler Swan (Gilroy Christopher) went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a pair of RBIs in the win.

The next contest for Desert is on Friday, April 28th at 2:30p at the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines. Today's game concluded the 2023 home season for the Roadrunners.
