COD Baseball opens Conference play by sinking the Vikings, 13-9

COD (4-8; 1-0) grabbed their first win at home of 2024 and did so convincingly as the top three batters went a combined 9 for 18, Roadrunners opened up IEAC play the right way, by sinking the Barstow Vikings (2-13; 0-1), 13-9.

Barstow jumped out to an early lead, but the Roadrunners responded and did not look back, until the ninth. In the top of the ninth the Vikings scored 6 runs to make the game close, but the Desert defense made some key plays to stop the threat.

Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Braden Turner (Henderson (NV) Basic Academy) tossed five innings, surrendering three runs, one earned on seven hits, striking out one and walking three for his second win of the season. Freshman left-handed relief pitcher Jacob Glazener (Apache Junction (AZ) H.S.) tossed two and a third inning striking out four and sophomore right-handed relief pitcher Eleazar Fregoso (Indio H.S.) had an adventurous outing. Fregoso gave up six runs, all earned on eight hits, striking out one.

Sophomore right fielder Aiden Arriaga (La Quinta H.S.) went had a spectacular day at the plate, going 4 for 6 with 2 runs score and 2 RBIs out of the 2 hole in the lineup. Sophomore second baseman Noah Gutierrez (Tempe (AZ) Marcos de Niza) went 2 for 6 out of the leadoff spot, with 3 runs scored and an RBI and sophomore shortstop Eric Arreola (South Gate International Studies Learning Center) went 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs out of the 3 hole in the lineup. Sophomore first baseman Adam Moser (Peoria (AZ) Sunrise Mountain) went 1 for 3 out of the clean-up spot with a run scored and 2 RBIs and freshman third baseman Trevor Stowe (Buffalo (WY) H.S.) went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs out of the 6 hole in the lineup. Freshman center fielder Jackson Martin (Regina (SK) Martin Collegiate) went 2 for 5 out of the 7 hole, adding a run and an RBI.

The next contest for Desert is on Saturday, February 24th with a double header beginning at 11a on the road to wrap up the three-game series against the Barstow Vikings.
