COD Football rolls in shutout of Corsairs, 49-0

COD (1-1) dominated with the offensive running attack and the defensive presence, as the Roadrunners got back in the win column, throttling the Santa Monica Corsairs (1-1) for the second straight season, this time by a score of 49-0.

While the lopsided score is impressive, they accomplished both a 49+ point victory and a shut out last season as well, with a 69-10 win at Santa Monica and a 12-0 win at Antelope Valley. The bulk of the carries was spread out amongst ten different rushers and seven different receivers made catches all over the field.

From the opening kick, Desert went right to the ground game, leaning on their hard working offensive line to make huge plays as sophomore running back Jaymes Jackson (Royal Oak (MI) Shrine Catholic) would get the heavy rushing load early. Jackson would have 12 carries for 79 yards on the night.

Unfortunately, the opening drive would end in an interception, as a pass meant for freshman wide receiver Joziaha Winfrey (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) in the corner of the end zone was tipped up to a Corsairs corner waiting for the break.

On their next possession, Desert made good on the passed up opportunity on their first set of downs, ending the five minute drive with four seconds left in the first quarter, when sophomore quarter back Armando Deniz (Thermal Coachella Valley) connected with freshman wide receiver Robert Taylor (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) for a 30 yard score. After an extra point by sophomore kicker Diego Martinez (Thermal Desert Mirage), the Roadrunners held a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing Santa Monica drive, right after the Corsairs crossed midfield, freshman linebacker Kaleb Bryant (Sierra Vista (AZ) Buena) recovered a fumbled handoff, putting Desert in a good spot to strike. Moments later, Deniz darted in from 21 yards out, to give the Roadrunners a 14-0 lead. A lead which would hold through to halftime, thanks to an interception by sophomore corner Jerry Kinney (Oak Park, MI) as time expired.

The Roadrunners found the end zone three times in the third quarter and it began with a heads-up play by freshman defensive end Tyrell Harvey (Springfield (MO) Central), who recovered a Corsairs fumble and pushed the ball to freshman linebacker Timothy Jones (Sierra Vista (AZ) Buena) who dazzled the home fans with a 50 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

On the very next drive, freshman linebacker Dylan Behymer (Buckeye (AZ) Paradise Honors) forced a fumble and grabbed the ball and one play later, Deniz hit Winfrey for a 29 yard score, to give the Desert a 28-0 lead.

On the Roadrunners next possession, sophomore running back Bronton Woodard, Jr. (Goldsboro (NC) Rosewood) carried the ball once for two years, then busted out a 62 yarder, hitting pay dirt and giving the home side a 35-0 lead.

To begin the fourth quarter, Deniz found freshman running back Trey-Quan Mathis (Wooster, OH) for another passing touchdown and on the very next drive for Santa Monica, sophomore corner Maquail Al-Mantaser (Goldsboro (NC) Rosewood) picked a pass for six, as he grabbed a pass at the 50-yardline and scampered in for a score.
