Since helming the program in 2014, Jack Steptoe has secured the Roadrunners best season under his leadership. The most recent time Desert Football had record of 8-2 or better was in 2007. The 8-2 overall record and 4-1 record in American Division – Mountain Conference play was good enough to secure a second-place finish.

The Roadrunners broke some important records and settled some scores from decades past during the course of the 2022 season, as Desert defeated Glendale for the first time in program history, defeated Pasadena City for only the second time in program history and first time since 2011, defeated Los Angeles Southwest for the first time since 1989, took home the COD-SBVC Challenge Trophy for the first time since 2015 and defeated Grossmont for the first time since 2008.

This is the first Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Bowl game for the Roadrunners since the 2016 season, when Desert hosted the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park in the Patriotic Bowl. The Roadrunners would fall short in that contest, 63-37.

Desert will face off with a Santa Barbara City Vaqueros team that finished the regular season with a record of 9-1, the Vaqueros ended the 2022 season as Champions of the American Division – Pacific Conference with a record of 5-0. The Vaqueros started the season 4-1.

Santa Barbara City finished the 2021 season in 2nd place the American Division – Pacific Conference with a record of 3-2, with an overall record of 7-4. The Vaqueros were most recently in a Bowl game in the 2021 season, where Santa Barbara City lost at the Palomar Comets of San Marcos in the Chick-fil-A Winter Festi-Bowl, 44-24. The Vaqueros are coached by Craig Moropoulos in his 15th season.

Desert and Santa Barbara City have played each other 8 times since 1963, the most recent time being on September 30, 2017, the Roadrunners won in Palm Desert, 25-20. The game in 2017 was the first time that Desert had defeated the Vaqueros in program history. Santa Barbara City holds an overall advantage in the series, 1-7 and Desert has yet to win on the road in this series, holding an 0-4 record at Santa Barbara.

Desert has played in seven Bowl games, winning three of them. The last Bowl game the Roadrunners won was in 1994, defeating the El Camino Warriors of Torrance, 59-48 in the Southern California Bowl.
