COD Men’s Basketball hosts the Frank Garcia Tip-Off Classic

COD (0-2) opened up the 2021-22 season with some good offensive production, but fell short in the win column, as the Roadrunners dropped a pair over the weekend.

Desert hosted their long running Frank Garcia Tip-Off Classic tournament, as they faced off with the LA Southwest Cougars and the Cerritos Falcons.

The Roadrunners opened up the Garcia Classic with a game against LA Southwest. In the first half, Desert struggled and both teams went into the break with the Cougars leading, 70-49. The second half was a different story, as the Roadrunners showed a good level of resistance and pushed LA Southwest to the limits. While the Cougars would prevail, 120-110, it was not due to a lack of effort on the part of Desert, the Roadrunners fought hard.

Desert had 4 of their 5 starters in double-digits led by sophomore starting guard Marquis McKinzey (Los Angeles John C. Fremont), who scored 27 points on 9 of 17 shooting, including going 6 of 12 from beyond the arc and he was a perfect 3 for 3 from the free throw line.

Freshman starting forward Koby Alvarez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) had 25 points, bolstered by a 6 for 10 performance from beyond the arc and led the team with 3 steals.

Sophomore starting guard D.J. Adams (Moreno Valley H.S.) was an assist short of a triple-double as he had 24 points, with 9 assists and 10 total rebounds, going 15 of 18 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore starting forward Abraham Bell (Twentynine Palms H.S.) had 12 points on 6 of 11 shooting and 9 total boards and freshman forward Johnny McCarus (Powder Springs (GA) Hillgrove) leapt off of the bench to score 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting, grabbing 7 total boards and going 3 for 3 from the free throw line in the loss.

In the Saturday game against the Cerritos Falcons, the Roadrunners had two starters in double figures, with Adams leading the way with 21 points on 7 of 15 shooting, including going 6 of 1 from the free throw line and leading the team with 5 assists.

Alvarez had another good day from beyond the arc, shooting 6 of 9 from three-point range and collecting 19 points and McKinzey had 4 assists.

Freshman center Garrett Hayden (Palm Desert H.S.) led the team with 8 total rebounds and sophomore center Tommy Mooney (La Quinta H.S.) leapt off of the bench to score 15 points on 4 of 5 shooting including going 5 of 8 from the charity stripe in the loss.
