COD Men’s Soccer grabs huge win at home, takes down the Mustangs, 2-1

COD (5-4-5; 1-1) got back on track with a late goal as daylight was fading, to give the home side their first Conference victory of the season, knocking off the Norco Mustangs (7-4-3; 1-1), 2-1.

The Roadrunners continued their home dominance of Norco, grabbing their fifth consecutive win in Palm Desert over the Mustangs. Both teams played to a 0-0 draw at the break and in the 52nd minute freshman forward Jose Calderon, Jr. (Thermal Desert Mirage) would find sophomore forward Vasilios Syrengelas (El Centro Central Union), who promptly rifled the shot into the back of the net to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 advantage. In the 84th minute, the Mustangs would tie the game 1-1. In the 88th minute, Desert would reclaim the lead as freshman midfielder Manuel Rodriguez (Thermal Coachella Valley) would find Calderon, Jr. in front of the net, and who poked the shot past the keeper for the game winner.

The Roadrunners played against the Norco Mustangs for the first time in program history in 2012 and hold a 6-3-1 overall record against the Mustangs. Desert has a 5-0 record against the Mustangs at home. The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be at the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga on October 11th, which will be their second conference game of the season. Desert first competed against the Panthers in 2002 and hold a 12-14-2 overall record against them. The next home game for Desert will be played on October 14th at 4:00p against the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines. This game will be played in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; therefore, the theme for this home conference match-up is to come dressed up in pink. The Roadrunners first matched-up against San Bernardino Valley in 1981 and have an overall record of 13-19-8 against the Wolverines and a 7-11-2 record in Palm Desert.
