2021 Season in Review - COD Women’s Soccer

Under sixth-year head coach Garrett Estrin, Desert finished the regular season with a record 14-6-1 overall and 9-2-1 in conference. The Roadrunners placed 2nd in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference (IEAC).

The Roadrunners collected the most team wins since 1998, surpassing the 1999 team and their 12-7-3 record, placing 2021 as second all-time in wins with 14.

Women's Soccer also collected some notable victories in 2021 as they defeated San Bernardino Valley for the first time since 2004, defeated Santa Ana for the first time in program history, defeated Norco for the first time in program history, sweeping the Mustangs. In addition to winning on the road against Mt. San Jacinto for only the second time in program history, winning on the road against Compton for only the second time in program history and defeating Miramar at home for only the second time in program history as well. Also, played LA City and Cypress for the first time in program history, played Citrus for the first time since 2005 and defeated Victor Valley in Victorville for only the third time ever.

Forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) was named First Team All-IEAC, leading the team with 15 goals and finished 27th in the state in goals scored. The 5-foot-tall sophomore was a force to be reckoned with on the field as she had five game winning goals, five multi-goal games, including having both goals, in a 2-1 win over San Bernardino Valley on October 8.

Midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) was also named First Team All-IEAC, finishing second on the team in goals scored with 10. The 5-foot 6 sophomore repeated as a First Team All-IEAC selection, having done so during her freshman campaign in 2019. Murguia had two game winning goals on the season and two multi-goal games, including scoring both goals in a road win at Compton on September 24.

Forward Citlalli Ponce (Indio Shadow Hills) was also named First Team All-IEAC, finishing third on the team in goals with five. The 5-foot 0 freshman had a multi-goal game and nailed two game winning goals on the season, including the game winner in a 1-0 win at Norco on October 26.

Midfielder Monserrath Bedolla-Guzman (Thermal Coachella Valley) was also named First Team All-IEAC. The 5-foot 3 freshman started all 20 games for the Roadrunners, scoring a pair of goals in 2021, both in the same game in an 8-0 win at Cerro Coso on October 12.

Defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) was also named First Team All-IEAC, finishing with three goals on the season, including two game winners. The 5-foot 9 sophomore repeated as an All-IEAC selection, having been named Second Team All-IEAC during her freshman campaign in 2019. Guerrero was 2 for 2 on penalty kicks and started 19 of 20 games on the season for the Roadrunners.

Forward Yisel Ybarra (Thermal Desert Mirage) was named Second Team All-IEAC, finishing with three goals, including a game winner. The 4-foot 11 freshman started 15 of 20 games for the Roadrunners in 2021.

Midfielder Eva Lupita Torres (Thermal Coachella Valley) was also named Second Team All-IEAC, started 12 games for the Roadrunners, playing in 15 of 20 games in 2021. The 5-foot 6 freshman scored her lone goal of the season in an 8-0 win at Cerro Coso on October 12.

Goal keeper Jessica Uribe (Indio Shadow Hills) was also named Second Team All-IEAC, started 16 games for the Roadrunners, playing in 18 of 20 games in 2021. The 5-foot 6 freshman played 1483 minutes in net for Desert, ending the season with a .733 save percentage, which was good enough to have her ranked in the top 50 of goal keepers in the state.

Defender Britny Gutierrez (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) was also named Second Team All-IEAC, started 15 games for the Roadrunners, playing in all 20 games in 2021.  The 5-foot 3 freshman scored two goals on the season and helped anchor a defense which collected nine shutouts in 2021.

Defender Alejandra Carrillo (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) was also named Second Team All-IEAC. The 5-foot 4 sophomore started 10 games for the Roadrunners, playing in 15 of 20 games in 2021.
