COD Women’s Soccer shoots down the Falcons, 7-1

COD (7-1) had two players with multi-goal games, grabbing their fourth consecutive win, as the Roadrunners dominated on the road, defeating the winless Cerritos Falcons (0-6), 7-1.

This was the first win in program history over Cerritos. The Roadrunners played against the Falcons for the first time in program history in 2008 and hold a 1-3 overall record against them. Desert has a 1-2 record against the Falcons at Cerritos.

Freshman goal keeper Zamara Cervantes (Thermal Coachella Valley) was brilliant in net again for the Roadrunners, playing all 90 minutes and making 2 saves on 3 shots on goal and was 11:10 from collecting the fourth consecutive clean sheet for Desert.

The Roadrunners jumped on Cerritos early and often, in the 5th minute, freshman midfielder Ximena Perez-Anguiano (Thermal Coachella Valley) connected with freshman midfielder Melanie Ramos-Brizuela (Rancho Mirage H.S.) for her second goal of the season and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Moments later, sophomore defense Monserrath Arellano Ayala (Indio H.S.) found Perez-Anguiano for her fourth goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage. In the 23rd minute, Ramos-Brizuela scored her third goal of the year and Desert took their 3-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the second half freshman midfielder Ruby Segura (Rancho Mirage H.S.) connected with sophomore forward Dalaina Johnson (Cathedral City H.S.) for her third goal of the year and in the 53rd minute, Arellano Ayala scored her first goal of the year, giving the Roadrunners a comfortable 5-0 lead. In the 58th minute, Segura would find Perez-Anguiano for her second goal of the game and team leading fifth goal of the season and in the 70th minute, freshman forward Angelica Leal (Thermal Coachella Valley) would join Perez-Anguiano for the team lead, with her fifth goal of the season.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be at the #2 ranked Mt. San Antonio Mounties of Walnut on September 26. Desert first competed against the Mounties in 2017 and hold a 0-3 overall record against them. The next home game for the Roadrunners will be in 18 days, on October 10, when Desert hosts the Norco Mustangs in Inland Empire Athletic Conference play. Desert first competed against the Mustangs in 2014 and hold an 4-3-1 overall record against them. The Roadrunners, last win in the series was in 2022, holding a 2-0-1 record against the Mustangs in Palm Desert.
