COD Women’s Volleyball grabs huge upset over Huskies, 3-2

COD (5-5) shook up the Volleyball world, at least in Southern California, thanks to great plays and an awesome home crowd as the Roadrunners hosted a five-set thriller, knocking off the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park (8-2), 3-2 (17-25, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 15-7).

Sophomore setter Kianna Diaz (Palm Desert H.S.) set a career high in leading the team with 6 service aces on the night, grabbing 46 set assists and 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kaila Sandy (La Quinta H.S.) tied a career high with 23 kills and had 19 digs and freshman outside hitter Melanie Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley) had 14 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Katie Alexander (Yucca Valley H.S.) tied for the team lead with 2 solo blocks and had 5 kills and freshman opposite hitter Grace Abrams (Fountain Hills, AZ) had 8 kills, 2 service aces and 16 digs. Freshman middle blocker Joselyn Nunez (Palm Desert H.S.) tied for the team lead with 2 solo blocks and freshman libero Briana Delval (Indio H.S.) led the team with 20 digs.

The Roadrunner's first game in program history against the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park was back in 1984. Since the Roadrunner's first matchup against East Los Angeles, Desert has a 5-8 all-time record against the Huskies, including a 5-3 record in Palm Desert. For the Roadrunner's next encounter, they will hit the road to compete against the Copper Mountain Fighting Cacti on Wednesday, September 28th for the first time in program history. The next home game for Desert will occur after 7 road games in 26 days for the Roadrunners. Their next home competition will be on Wednesday, October 19th at 5:00p against the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga. The Roadrunners first played against Chaffey in 1976, holding a 28-31 overall record against them and an 18-13 record in the Coachella Valley.
