COD Women’s Volleyball grabs 1st IEAC title in 15 years, sweeps Eagles, 3-0

COD (13-8; 8-0) has had one team in their way to the last five playoff appearances and Conference titles, tonight, in front of a raucous home crowd, the Roadrunners pushed past that obstacle and shot down the defending IEAC Champs, the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (14-11; 7-2), snagging their first Championship in 15 years, while grabbing their ninth sweep of 2022, 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-16).

The last time the Roadrunners won Conference, in 2007, they were in the Foothill Conference. Sophomore outside hitter Kaila Sandy (La Quinta H.S.) led the team with 15 kills, and had 12 digs and an assist block and sophomore middle blocker Katie Alexander (Yucca Valley H.S.) had 5 kills, a solo block and an assist block. Sophomore setter Kianna Diaz (Palm Desert H.S.) led the team with 34 set assists and also led the team with 3 service aces and freshman outside hitter Melanie Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley) had 9 kills, 2 service aces, 8 digs and 2 assist blocks. Freshman outside hitter Grace Abrams (Fountain Hills (AZ) H.S.) had 4 kills, 2 service aces and 8 digs and freshman libero Briana Delval (Indio H.S.) led the team with 20 digs and had 2 service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Bilhartz (Bowling Green, MO) led the team with 2 solo blocks, had 3 kills and 2 assist blocks.

The Roadrunners first game in program history against Mt. San Jacinto Eagles was in 1984. Since the Roadrunners first contest against Mt. San Jacinto, Desert has a 42-22 all-time record against the Eagles, including a 22-10 record at home. The Roadrunners next encounter will be at home for sophomore night against the San Bernardino Wolverines on Wednesday November 9 at 5:00p. The Roadrunners first played against San Bernardino Valley in 1976, holding a 33-28 overall record against the Wolverines and a 16-14 record in Palm Desert.
