Bio

Angel Meraz
Athletic Counselor
Office: Kinesiology 102F

Angel Meraz was first inspired to serve as an educator while completing an undergraduate course in Education at UCLA. The professor of the course challenged the students to write a weekly journal answering the question “If I really loved my students, I would…” This prompt challenged Angel to think deeply about the students she would serve and the potential they had to transform the world if given the chance. From the beginning, Angel has had a student-centered focus when thinking about who she would become as an educator.

Angel received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Master’s of Education with an emphasis in School Counseling from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Doctorate in Community College Leadership from Kansas State University. She has served in a variety of roles throughout her career: as a graduate assistant for the Office of the Provost at the University of Maryland, as a school counselor in a charter, private and public high school, as a Director of Student Support for a non-profit scholarship-giving organization, and as a Director of Upward Bound. Most recently, Angel has been serving the student-athletes at College of the Desert as a counselor since July 2016. Angel has also taught several courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Through her work, she has developed a strong passion for serving students and their families.

Angel is a native of the Coachella Valley, growing up in Indio and graduating from Indio High School. As a Rajah, Angel competed in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is proud to be back living in the valley and serving in the same community in which she was born and raised.
