Bio
Ana Hernandez
Athletic Counselor
Office: Kinesiology 102F
As a first-generation college graduate, Ana Hernandez understands that success is rarely a straight path. It is built through resilience, determination, strong support systems, and the courage to believe in what is possible. Those experiences have shaped both her personal journey and her professional mission, inspiring her to help College of the Desert student-athletes overcome obstacles, pursue their goals, and reach their full potential.
Ana earned a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University Carbondale before completing her Master of Social Work (MSW) at California State University, San Bernardino. Throughout her career in higher education, she has been passionate about empowering students to navigate the complexities of college, develop confidence in their abilities, and build meaningful pathways toward academic, personal, and professional success.
Since joining College of the Desert, Ana has served students in a variety of counseling and instructional roles, including Foster Youth Services, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS)/CARE, and Work Experience Education. In each position, she has focused on expanding educational access, removing barriers to student success, connecting students with critical campus and community resources, and fostering an inclusive environment where every student feels supported and valued.
As Athletic Counselor, Ana is dedicated to helping Roadrunner student-athletes excel both in the classroom and in competition. She recognizes the unique demands of balancing academics, athletics, and personal responsibilities, and is committed to providing individualized guidance that empowers student-athletes to remain academically eligible, graduate on time, and prepare for successful careers beyond college. She believes participation in athletics develops lifelong qualities—including discipline, resilience, teamwork, leadership, accountability, and perseverance—that extend far beyond the playing field.
Ana's connection to athletics reaches well beyond her professional responsibilities. As a former member of the United States Army Reserve, she developed a deep appreciation for teamwork, commitment, leadership, and service. As the proud parent of three children who have participated in youth and collegiate athletics—including a daughter who competed in NCAA Division II women's golf—she has firsthand experience navigating youth sports, college recruiting, eligibility requirements, and the challenges families face throughout the student-athlete journey. Experiencing that process as a first-generation college family has strengthened her commitment to helping Roadrunner student-athletes and their families confidently navigate their own educational and athletic experiences.
Committed to serving the Coachella Valley beyond campus, Ana has devoted countless hours to community service. She previously served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in foster care, advocating for the best interests of vulnerable youth, and has held leadership and volunteer positions with several nonprofit athletic booster organizations that support youth sports, educational opportunities, and community engagement throughout the region.
Outside of the office, Ana enjoys staying active and embracing the outdoors. Whether hiking scenic trails, running local routes, or exploring new destinations, she believes physical activity promotes both mental and physical well-being. Although she jokingly says she isn't the fastest runner, she has completed three full marathons and numerous half marathons, viewing every finish line as a testament to perseverance, preparation, and determination rather than speed. She also enjoys spending weekends cheering on her youngest son at wrestling tournaments and fondly reflects on years spent supporting her older children from the sidelines of football fields and golf courses.
A proud bilingual counselor serving students in both English and Spanish, Ana is passionate about ensuring every Roadrunner has access to the guidance, encouragement, and resources needed to succeed. She considers it a privilege to work alongside College of the Desert's student-athletes and is committed to helping them thrive academically, athletically, and personally while preparing for meaningful lives and careers beyond their time as Roadrunners.
