Since joining College of the Desert in October 2016, Brian Sylva has led the Sports Information Department, overseeing media relations, digital content, and storytelling for all 15 Roadrunner athletic programs. He serves as the primary media contact for women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, beach volleyball, and softball.

Mr. Sylva came to COD after nine successful years as the Sports Information Director at San Bernardino Valley College, bringing with him a wealth of experience in journalism, marketing, and political strategy. His unique career path includes nearly a decade as a reporter for the Riverside Press-Enterprise—where he covered high school and community college athletics—along with time as a chief strategist on local and statewide political campaigns. This background honed his skills in communications, media engagement, and digital strategy, which he now applies to promote Roadrunner Athletics.

A respected leader within California Community College Athletics, Mr. Sylva has served in several key statewide roles. He was elected President of the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) in 2017 after previously serving as its President-Elect. He has been a judge for the State Student-Athlete of the Month Award on multiple occasions since 2007 and has worked at several high-profile state championships, including serving as the Sports Information Director for the 2019 CCCAA Beach Volleyball Team and Pairs State Championship, head announcer for the 2019 CCCAA Women’s Volleyball State Championship, and media liaison for the 2010 CCCAA Men’s Basketball State Championship.

In recognition of his career-long contributions to the profession, Mr. Sylva received the B.R.A.S.S. T.O.P. Lifetime Achievement Award from the CCCSIA in 2022 at the CCCAA Spring Convention. The honor—short for “Bringing Respect and Superior Service to Our Profession”—celebrates those who have made a lasting impact in collegiate athletics communications.

Beyond athletics, Mr. Sylva has dedicated much of his life to public service and community leadership. A longtime Inland Empire resident, he was elected to the Beaumont Unified School District Board of Trustees in 2016, serving one 4 year term, and then to the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District Board of Trustees in 2020, where he continues to serve. His civic leadership includes serving as President of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (2016–2019) and as a member of the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Healthcare District Board (2014–2017).

Through his dual passions for athletics and public service, Mr. Sylva continues to champion opportunities for student-athletes, strengthen community partnerships, and highlight the stories that make Roadrunner Athletics a source of pride for the Coachella Valley and beyond.

Mr. Sylva and his wife have been married for 20 years and adopted 4-year-old twin girls in 2020.
