COD Women’s Soccer uses big 2nd half to knock off Tartars, 2-0

COD (2-0) remained undefeated on the season as they secured their first clean sheet of the season on a pair of second half goals, defeating the Compton Tartars (0-1), 2-0.

The Roadrunners played against the Compton Tartars for the first time in program history in 2010 and hold a 5-4-1 overall record against the Tartars. Desert has a 3-2 record against the Tartars at home.

Desert and the Tartars fought to a 0-0 tie at the break as neither team was going to relent under the heat as the game was delayed over an hour due to heat concerns. On the back side of the second half, the Roadrunners would strike in the 42nd minute, as sophomore midfielder Miranda Salcido (Indio Shadow Hills) would find sophomore forward Dalaina Johnson (Cathedral City H.S.) in front of the Compton net and punished the ball into the back of the twine giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 advantage. Sixty-eight seconds later, freshman midfielder Ruby Segura (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would find freshman midfielder Melanie Ramos-Brizuela (Rancho Mirage H.S.) off to the left of the Tartars net and she too would grab her first goal of the season, giving the home side a 2-0 lead.

Freshman goal keeper Zamara Cervantes (Thermal Coachella Valley) would start the game and freshman goal keeper Perla Melchor-Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley) would wrap up the clean sheet.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be on the road at the Los Angeles Valley Monarchs of Valley Glen on September 1. The Roadrunners first competed against Los Angeles Valley in 2008 and hold an 0-1-2 overall record against them. Desert has a 0-0-1 record against the Monarchs in Valley Glen. The next home game for the Roadrunners will be on September 5, when Desert hosts the San Diego Miramar Jets. Desert first competed against the Jets in 2008 and hold an 4-7-1 overall record against them. The Roadrunners hold a 2-3 record against the Jets in Palm Desert.
