COD Football rolls in 1st win of the season, knocking off the Tartars, 28-8

COD (1-5; 1-0) used a strong running game and a dominating defense, the Roadrunners grabbed their first win of the season, knocking off the winless Compton Tartars (0-5; 0-1), 28-8.

The Roadrunners played against the Compton Tartars for the first time in program history in 2014 and hold a 6-0 overall record against Compton. Desert has a 3-0 record against the Tartars at home.

Sophomore defensive back Shyde Elam (6-3 / 210) from Western H.S. in Las Vegas, Nevada had a career night. Grabbing a career high 8 solo tackles and tying a 2nd best of the season with 10 total tackles, including a 14-yard sack to end the first quarter. Elam also forced a fumble midway through the 4th quarter which halted a Compton drive and broke up a pass. Sophomore defensive end Callum Armstrong (6-6 / 230) from La Quinta H.S. had a career night. 4 of the 5 sacks the Roadrunners "Department of Defense" dropped on Compton were from Armstrong. He terrified the Tartars backfield for 60 minutes and all 4 of his solo tackles were for sacks. Freshman quarterback Thomas Ansley (6-1 / 225) from La Quinta H.S. had a season high in number of carries and yards rushing. Ansley grabbed 20 rushes for 131 yards and 2 scores and had 2 punts totaling 108 yards. Sophomore kicker Dylan Armendariz (6-0 / 170) from Palm Springs H.S. had a season high in points scored (2/2 FGs & 1/1 XPs) and including the second longest field goal of his career (45 yards).

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be at the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga (5-1; 1-0) on Saturday, October 26 at 6p. The Roadrunners first competed against Chaffey in 1962 and hold a 11-17 overall record against them. Desert has a 7-7 record against the Panthers in Rancho Cucamonga. The most recent time the Roadrunners played Chaffey was in 2023, where Desert fell, 41-27. The most recent time Desert defeated the Panthers was in Rancho Cucamonga in 2008, defeating Chaffey, 27-14 in the last game of the 2008 season. Since 2008, Desert and Chaffey have only faced one another twice, with the Panthers winning games in 2009 and 2023.
